This is a pretty video... but I agree, it sends a dangerous message... because it makes everything look so perfect (and building a longterm relationship is anything but). Watching this, I thought this is a sweet couple but they are in the beginning stage of their relationship. Soon their feelings will fade and they won't be like this, they won't be so attached. This sends the message that we need an "other" to make us whole. But in truth, an individual... you... are already whole and don't need another to "complete you."
But as humans, we need relationships. Not necessarily romantic relationships or verification, but we crave relationships as a current society. It does not indicate that we are not independent, but it does have commitment. No one "needs" a romantic "other", but we all crave to be loved. That's all I think we really want in a direct or indirect way.
I completely agree on that. As humans we are social beings, we need to share with others, when we don't we feel a great lack and suffer. I was just saying one of my opinions about romantic relationships specifically, since this is what this video was about. But then again, I think my ideas about couples are rather unconventional so I can see how that can be misinterpreted.
My opinion is if we "crave to be loved" that means we don't love ourselves enough (we have breaks and lacks) and so we can't love the other(s) for who they are, without judgement or fake attachment, because to me love is a choice, and it's respect to let the other decide if he loves you or not, and wisdom is to accept all that. That's only how i feel it and not a definitive description of a fact.
This reminds me of a quote I saw at work recently (we put inspirational quotes on a board in the staff room): "Self confidence is the most attractive quality a person can have. How can anyone see how awesome you are if you can't see it yourself?"
Replace confidence with self love... same thing, how can anyone love you if you don't love yourself first?
